Dedicated fibre from Geo gives Gyron room to grow at new data centre facility

London, United Kingdom, 13 October, 2009 – Geo has won a contract with Gyron Internet, a major UK provider of specialist data centre services, to provide fibre optical connectivity into its new Centro data centre facility. The deal, worth up to £1.5 million, enables Gyron to manage its own network, and access unrestricted bandwidth from its investment in Geo’s advanced fibre optic infrastructure.

Gyron selected Geo to provide a dedicated fibre link to its data centre in Hemel Hempstead as rising customer demand for cost-effective rack space led it to expand into new facilities. Robin Balen, Managing Director of Gyron, said: “Our customers trust us to host critical parts of their businesses, so our facilities need to be available and reliable, and our network must be fast enough to keep their operations running at top speed.”

“We also recognised that now was the time to locate outside London. Not only is power and land more freely available outside the M25, but it’s also an important consideration for many of our customers who require a secondary back-up site located away from their primary data centre.”

Availability of redundant dark fibre connectivity was a prime consideration when Gyron began the search for a suitable site for the new datacentre. Robin continued: “Geo, unlike a lot of other fibre providers, were extremely helpful in working with us to identify suitable fibre-rich sites. They were therefore a natural choice when it came to tendering for the fibre connectivity itself. As a business our success is inextricably linked to the quality and affordability of our connectivity.”

“Geo was able to deliver on both counts. Its network offered end-to-end fibre, highest levels of availability and SLAs, and required only a short build-out to reach our new premises. Its ability to offer dedicated links over managed services also made it attractively priced.” Robin added: “The dedicated fibre link allows Gyron to run its own network, applying Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology over it to get nearly unlimited bandwidth from a single connection.

On winning the contract, Geo connected Gyron’s new Centro data centre to its national fibre optic network by laying new redundant ducts and fibre cable. The build-out project was completed before time; six weeks before the data centre was due to go online, allowing Gyron to transition business in to the new site smoothly.

Chris Smedley, Chief Executive of Geo, concluded: “As hosting and co-location businesses undergo tremendous growth due to the explosion in online business, their long-term success depends on their ability to control their own destiny when it comes to bandwidth. Dedicated networks offer considerable cost advantages over managed services for these high bandwidth consumption businesses. It’s therefore critical for them to be able to access this technology easily and affordably. Geo is committed to helping companies such as Gyron capitalise on a rising market and looks forward to working with more in the future.”
