The UK’s largest organisations have only one month remaining to set up effective monitoring strategies to help them manage their liabilities under the Government’s CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.
The reminder comes from CA, one of the world’s leading independent IT firms, which is helping blue chip organisations track and reduce emissions for the CRC’s mandatory targets. The company believes that large organisations usually need a minimum of 3 months to organise a carbon monitoring framework, but this can be reduced to 1 month with the right tools
The CRC EES demands reporting of carbon emissions from corporate activities from April 1, 2010. The legislation affects any UK user of 6000MWh or more of electricity and forces them to cut their carbon emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. A public league table will rank organisations’ performance on energy efficiency and carbon. Penalties will be levied on non-compliant organisations.
CA’s carbon emissions tracking work for Tesco – part of the retailer’s pledge to halve its emissions by 2020 even before the CRC’s targets were published – is part of one of the most comprehensive corporate responses yet seen to the climate change and sustainability issues facing large organisations. CA is also reporting against the CRC for its own operations in the UK and Ireland.
